Climbing is dangerous! Every year many climbers are broken, maimed, and killed. Don't be so foolish as to trust your life to what you see here. I'm not a guide and neither is this web site. If you don't know what you are doing or where you are going, please take a course or hire a guide!

Johannesberg

Most people have never heard of this mountain. But amongst climbers in the Northwest is well known. Its reputation for rockfall, icefall, and unplanned bivies is well-earned. There is no short or easy way up or down, though the shortest approach is only 30 minutes from the Cascade Pass parking lot, and the same lot is in plain view from the summit, 4600 feet below, and less than a mile away.

Recently a new descent variation, "Doug's Direct" has taken some of the edge off the mountain, but it still gives nothing away: On most other mountains Doug's Direct would be considered onerously long and circuitous. But on Johannesberg, it is the certainly the safest, if not fastest option.
