Climbing is dangerous! Every year many climbers are broken, maimed, and killed. Don't be so foolish as to trust your life to what you see here. I'm not a guide and neither is this web site. If you don't know what you are doing or where you are going, please take a course or hire a guide! |

The Emmons/Upper WinthropAugust ??, 1998My first ascent of the Emmons was with Gayla in 1998. We met on the Internet- she asked my advice about a tent. She came out in 1998 for a four-week climbing odyssey that included Adams, Rainier, St. Helens, and some sport climbing at Little Si. This is one of the few examples of one of my schemes working out just as I envisioned it. I never really thought we'd get the weather to climb three volcanoes in four weekends. The Rainier climb was fun. We broke it into three days, which helped us rest for summit day. It was clear, cold, and windy above Emmons Flats. We decided to take shelter for a rest in a tent at 12,500'. Later, the owner of the tent chastised us for doing this. I did not use approach shoes on this climb and the 4.5 mile walk on dry trail to the parking lot reduced my feet to hamburger. I won't make that mistake again. Full trip report with pictures to come... |
